Grits, grits and more grits. They are smooth, buttery, sometimes cheesy, and they are the perfect antidote for chilly winter days, even though this January, at least, is shaping up to be a mild one. All the more reason to stock up on and spoon in grits ahead of time; your body will be conditioned … Keep reading .

Photo Credit: SandDad.comIt’s officially springtime in the South! Pollen covers cars, porches, and patios in Georgia. Cherry blossoms are on display in DC. Blue bonnets blanket open fields across Texas. Families flock to beaches and theme parks in Florida. Yep, nature is calling everyone to play, explore and dine outdoors. One sure way to get a full helping of local culture, food and fun is to spend a day or so enjoying a festival (oh, and we have plenty). From food and flowers to music and mayhem, here’s a few not-to-be-missed spring festivals in our region:World Grits Festival – April 13-15. That’s right, grits has its own festival in St. George, SC (where they eat more grits per capita than any other town in the world). Conceived by a few local Piggly Wiggly managers, the World Grits Festival is the place to go for grits-based arts and crafts, opportunities to participate in grits grinding, and of course, a grits cook-off. Just an hour outside of Charleston, nearly 50,000 people visit St. George for the festival every spring. And the best part? This bit of family fun underwrites scholarships for local students.Atlanta Dogwood Festival – April 20-22. Very little tops strolling through the park amongst dogwood trees in full bloom. Unless, of course, you add an artists market, live concerts, and a little outdoor shopping – all for free. That’s the Atlanta Dogwood Festival in a nutshell. After wandering the seemingly miles of art on display, grab some festival fare, spread out your blanket and enjoy music from all over the world.Texas SandFest – April 20-22. Here’s your opportunity to see Master Sand Sculptors in action while soaking up some sun on the beach. Hosted in Port Aransas, TX, on the northern tip of Mustang Island, the festival and entertainment are free and tickets to see the sculptures up-close-and-personal are only $2. There’s plenty to do in Port Aransas should you grow tired of the beach (as if).Great American Pie Festival – April 28-29. Now in its eleventh year, the Great American Pie Festival in Celebration, FL is sure to please pie-lovers of all ages. If you somehow can’t find something you like at the Never Ending Pie Buffet ($10), then surely you’ll enjoy trying pies from local eateries or perhaps learning something new at the free demonstrations. Even children are given a chance to make their own pies at the Crisco Kids Creation Station.New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival – April 27-May 6. With seven days of noon-to-night live concerts, there’s something for every music-lover at this festival. Spread over two weekends, the NO Jazz Fest features everything from local university jazz ensembles to global artists like Bruce Spingsteen, Experanza Spalding, Herbie Hancock, and the Foo Fighters. Tickets are sold in single-day increments, so check the daily schedule to get the best bang for your buck.Kentucky Derby – May 5. Not so much a festival as it is an experience, we would be remiss not to include it here. There are a couple of ways to experience Derby weekend in Louisville, KY – neither will disappoint. The first would be to don your finest Derby-attire (seersucker jackets, wide-brimmed hats), get a ticket to the race, head over to Churchill Downs, and sip mint juleps while hob-nobbing with the other fans. The other way involves partaking in the celebrity-hosted, nightly parties and never even seeing a horse (seersucker and wide-brimmed hats, however are welcomed and encouraged). Not planning to visit either of these places this spring? Check with local tourism offices of areas on your travel itinerary to see what they’ve got lined up while you’re passing through (a festival stop makes for a great break on a road trip).Happy travels!.
