I absolutely adore this Space Oddity video of Bowie’s first TV performance that took place on a British awards show. David Robert Jones was born in London on 8 January 1947 subsequently changing his name to David Bowie in 1966. Still performing five decades later, Bowie is perhaps one of the most influential figures ever in British pop music. He began performing music when he was 13 years old, learning the saxophone while he was at Bromley Technical High School where one of his tutors was Owen Frampton, the father of musician Peter Frampton. Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the ’70s. After spending several years in the late ’60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. Prior to his breakthrough in 1972, he recorded a proto-metal record and a pop/rock album, eventually redefining glam rock with his ambiguously sexy Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy made Bowie an international star, yet he wasn’t content to continue to churn out glitter rock. You see, I stumbled upon David Bowie fairly late in my life, if you can count my early teens as late? I grew up in a house where my love for music from the 60′s and 70′s was encouraged, but somehow my parents had missed the David Bowie train, so I ended up waiting years to discover this extremely talented man’s music. But let me tell you, it was well worth the wait!Source: google.ca via Christianna on PinterestHonestly, it was the 2001 film “A Knight’s Tale”, that brought Mr. Bowie’s music to the forefront for me. When his song “Golden Years” played in the film, it quickly became one of the my favorite moments, as well as one of my very favorite songs! Upon discovering Bowie sang the song, I quickly learned that I actually wasn’t a total stranger of his tunes. His mind is one of a kind, which produces lyrics, melodies and fantastic charisma that is all his own. He knows who he is and rocks the hell out of it while performing, acting or just being. Bowie helped lead a charge that paved the way for musicians to break away from a semi cookie cutter image, and do their own thing. Sure, his career has had it’s ups and downs. It still amazes me that “Labyrinth” failed at the box offices, and is now a huge cult classic. But what do I know? I don’t think I saw it till I was at least 15. Seriously, where was I all those years? But non the less the man has staying power and has been inspiring musicians, artists, actors and everyday people for years!So here’s to you David Bowie! Thank you for writing from your beautiful, strange heart and for helping inspire the 13 year old version of myself and her love of music. That love still lives on today. Oh, and thanks for creating one of my favorite songs EVER! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!P.S. why did I randomly only pick pictures of Bowie smoking?P.S.S. have a listen to this playlist I made (it took forever for me to figure out how to make it).
