Gas prices continue to rise, and some predict the cost of a gallon of gas could reach $5 by Memorial Day. Gasoline prices nationwide could return to $4 a gallon or more around midyear with some areas approaching $5 before prices ebb back, a company that follows the oil industry predicts. Given current and foreseeable conditions, the median nationwide price per gallon for regular unleaded gas could peak at $3.95 in May, analysts for GasBuddy.com said in a forecast released today. During that month, the national average could range between $3.75 and $4.15 a gallon, they said. But average prices could climb far higher in some major metropolitan areas as drivers prepare for the Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, the analysts projected. Among the 20 cities on GasBuddy’s Memorial Day list, Chicago was predicted to face the highest average prices, ranging between $4.60 and $4.95 a gallon.
